Arman Tsaturyan (MPH 2013) Publishes His MPH Master Thesis on Risk Factors of Postoperative Complications after Radical Cystectomy

AUA MPH Alumnus Arman Tsaturyan, MD, MPH (2013) has published his master’s project that explored the risk factors for complications after radical cystectomy in Armenia in the internationally ranked peer-reviewed open-access journal SpringerPlus. The coauthors are Varduhi Petrosyan, MS, PhD, Dean of the School of Public Health, Byron Crape, MSPH, PhD, Nazarbaev University School of Medicine, Yeva Sahakyan, MD, MPH (2011), Toronto Health Economics and Technology Assessment (THETA) Collaborative, University of Toronto, and Lusine Abrahamyan, MD, MPH (2003), PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and AUA School of Public Health.

The study included 273 patients with continent or conduit urinary diversion. Over one-fourth of them had at least one in-hospital complication; this rate was similar to those observed in other countries. The most frequent types of complications were wound-related, gastrointestinal and infectious. The perioperative transfusion, the hospital type, and presence of certain non-communicable diseases were independent predictors of postoperative complications. The work highlights the need to address the issues regarding surgeon training and hospital volume to decrease the risk of complications by Armenian policy and decision makers. These findings may also be relevant and valuable to other countries with similar levels of economic development and with similar health care systems.
